Port Canaveral is about 45 miles east of Orlando International Airport (MCO), roughly 55 to 75 minutes by car via the SR 528 Beachline toll road. The fastest door-to-door option is a private car: SPL Transportation charges a flat $169 per SUV (up to 6 passengers, tolls included). Cruise line buses charge per person and run on a fixed schedule; Uber and Lyft work but may lack room for cruise luggage.

Every week we drive families from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to the cruise terminals at Port Canaveral, and the question we hear most is simple: what is the easiest way to get there without stress? The honest answer depends on your group size, your luggage and how much buffer you have before boarding. Below is a plain comparison of every option, with real distances and real prices.
How far is Port Canaveral from Orlando airport?
Port Canaveral sits on the Atlantic coast in Brevard County, about 45 miles (72 km) east of MCO. The direct route is the SR 528 Beachline Expressway, a toll road that runs almost straight from the airport to the port. With normal traffic the drive takes 55 to 75 minutes; on busy Saturday and Sunday embarkation mornings, plan on the longer end. For a full breakdown of timing, see our guide to how far Port Canaveral is from Orlando airport.

Your options, compared
| Option | Typical cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private SUV (SPL) | $169 flat per vehicle, up to 6 people, tolls included | 55–75 min, leaves when you land | Families, groups, lots of luggage, tight timing |
| Cruise line bus | Priced per person, each way | Fixed departures; you wait for the bus to fill | Solo travelers and couples with flexible time |
| Shared shuttle | Per person | Multiple stops, set schedule | Budget travelers who don’t mind waiting |
| Uber / Lyft | Varies with demand; XL for families costs more | Depends on driver availability | Light packers, 1–3 people |
| Rental car | Daily rate + tolls + port parking | You drive and park | Travelers continuing a road trip after the cruise |
Third-party prices change often; always confirm on the provider’s site.
1. Private car service
A private transfer picks you up at baggage claim and drives straight to your cruise terminal. You do not share the ride, you do not wait for other passengers and the price is per vehicle, not per person. For a family of four or more this is usually the point where private becomes cheaper than paying per head. With SPL the rate is $169 per SUV, tolls included, gratuity optional. We track your flight, so if you land late your chauffeur adjusts at no extra charge.
2. Cruise line transfers
Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and other lines sell bus transfers from MCO. They are convenient because your bags can be tagged for the ship, but you pay per passenger, each way, and the bus leaves on the cruise line’s schedule. If you are a couple with time to spare, it works. For a family of five the per-person math adds up quickly. We compare the numbers in our Disney cruise transportation guide.
3. Shared shuttles
Shared shuttles cost less per person but stop for other passengers and sometimes at other terminals. Expect longer total travel time.
4. Uber and Lyft
Rideshare works for small groups with carry-ons. The catch on cruise days is space: a standard car will not fit four people with week-long luggage, and most rideshare cars do not carry child seats. Prices also rise when hundreds of cruise passengers request rides at the same time.
5. Rental car
Renting only makes sense if you are driving somewhere after the cruise. Otherwise you pay for the rental, the tolls and parking at the port for the length of your sailing.

How to plan your timing
- Check your boarding window. Your cruise line assigns a port arrival time. Book your pickup so you arrive at the start of that window, not the end.
- Add the drive plus a buffer. Count 75 minutes from MCO plus 20–30 minutes for weekend traffic near the port.
- Flying in the same day? Pick a flight that lands before about 11 AM. Most lines recommend arriving the day before; if you do, we can pick you up at your Orlando hotel instead for a flat $219 (see Disney hotel to Port Canaveral).
- Tell us your terminal. Port Canaveral has several cruise terminals. Add your cruise line and ship when you book and your chauffeur goes straight to the right one.

The bottom line
For one or two travelers with flexible time, a cruise line bus is fine. For families, groups, anyone with more than a carry-on each, or anyone flying in close to boarding time, a private SUV at a flat $169 is usually the simplest and often the cheapest option per person. One booking, one vehicle, straight to the ship.
